An attempt at Scafell from Eskdale today, difficult to get to Eskdale and pushed for time I got as far as Broad Stand and decided to turn back.
7hrs.
Parking at the foot of Hardknott Pass (free).
It was almost 11am by the time I had kitted up and set off following the path that runs alongside the River Esk.
The walk up the valley is easy going.
And scenic.
Lovely spot for a dip in warmer weather.
Lingcove Bridge, cross here and climb up to the boggy plateau of Great Moss.
On the way up to Great Moss.
A bite to eat here and realised I had over shot the route by about a mile or so. Anyway I am looking at Cam Spout Crag and Scafell in the clouds.
Back on track looking up Cam Spout with the path going up to the left of it, oh yes.
Half way up.
Once the water falls are cleared the path continues steeply upwards to where the hard work begins as you climb the steep scree up to Broad Stand, I should have turned left earlier but was unsure of the route with the snow cover and it being my first time up this way.
Looking back down.
This view is towards Scafell Pike.
And this view is towards Scafell.
Without crampons and ice axe (left em in the car, oops) and with it being almost 3pm I decided to turn back rather than press on, wouldn't have seen much anyway and it would be dark when I eventually got back to the car.
Back down on Great Moss at Sampsons Stones.
Almost dark at Taw House.
Crossing the bridge at Brotherilkeld almost back at the car.
Scafell will be still be there when I next visit :)
