Peak District, Mam Tor & The great Ridge, Castelton, Cavedale, Mam Tor.

Parked in the NT car park just below Mam Tor summit we aimed to walk the ridge and then down to Hope from Lose Hill continuing onto Castleton, up through Cavedale back down to Winnats Pass, over that then up Mam Tor's SE Ridge.

6 hrs.

Mam Tor.
And it's summit on the first ascent on a cool and misty day.
Walking along the nicely paved ridge path.
Looking back to Mam Tor.
Approaching Back Tor.
At Lose Hill.
The walk took us down to Hope and through the fields to Castleton where we visited the church.
View inside the church.
Castleton's Market Place.
Going up Cavedale.
From the top of Cavedale we backtracked and headed for Winnats pass which took us down this steep hillside. Castleton can be seen top right.
Heading up the northern slopes of Winnats Pass with the car park for Speedwell Mine below.
Don't slip.
Looking towards the top of Winnats Pass.
It's a long way down.
Heading towards Mam Tor again.
A625, this section was closed in 1979.
The unstable face of Mam Tor from the ridge path.
Care needed on this short traverse near the summit.
A short walk took us back to the car park and then it was off to The Old Cheshire Cheese Inn in Castleton for light refreshments.
