7 Hours
A wander over snowy Alport Moor and onto Bleaklow leading eventually to the B-29 Superfortress Crash Site. The plane came down in 1948 near Higher Shelf Stones.
Alport Moor.
Start at the car park just above the Snake Inn on the A57.
After a short climb and crossing a few snow banks the gradient eases as you walk onto the moor.
Looking back across the vally to Kinder Scout.
Care is needed crossing the peat bog as the path is not very clear in places.
A view down Alport Dale having picked my way through the peat bog.
I am headed this way though, to the right up towards Bleaklow.
Plenty of deep snow still around.
Can't recall the exact point where this picture was taken or the direction but it looks ok so I though I'd bung it in.
Eventually I came across the paved path that forms part of the Pennine Way across Bleaklow from the A57 and after a bit of a wander I decided to head off to Higher Shelf Stones in search of the B-29 crash site which would be off to the right in the picture above with Kinder Scout in the distance.
The crowds on Higher Shelf Stones, follow the people to find the site, off to the left in the above pic.
Looking down towards Glossop.
The crash Site.....
Overexposed was an aircraft of the USAF’s 16th Photographic Reconaissance Squadron, detached to RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire. More info here.
Looking back up to the crash site heading back towards the A57 Snake Pass.
Seeing as I was now pushed for time I decided to head down the Snake pass towards Lady Clough where I could take the path through the woods and back to the car, not recommended...crazy car drivers and no pavement.
Fallen trees in the forest. From here it was a short walk back to the car to end a good walk.
